Why are we doing this?
The Jiveathon is sponsoring Endometriosis research this year
Endometriosis (pronounced end-oh-mee- tree-oh-sis) is an enigmatic disease affecting millions of women all over the world regardless of country, colour, race or class in society. It affects women during the reproductive phase and, although it is not a killer disease, it can make a woman's life an utter misery. Unfortunately the main complaint of painful periods is often ignored as 'a normal price to be paid for being a woman'.
It is a condition where the cells that are normally found lining the uterus are also found in other areas of the body but usually within the pelvis. Each month this tissue outside of the uterus, under normal hormonal control, is built up and then breaks down and bleeds in the same way as the lining of the uterus. This internal bleeding into the pelvis, unlike a period, has no way of leaving the body. This leads to inflammation, extreme pain and the formation of scar tissue.
It is neither an infection nor contagious nor is it a cancer. Many theories exist about its causes and cures but none are certain, so funding research in this area, through a fun day like Jiveathon, will have a beneficial effect on the lives of millions of women in the UK and worldwide.
Lorraine Cooper of Stress Free Office has sent me this amazing document (what is endometriosis) she’s written.
